Car Hire Excess Insurance

So after reading Martin's email today under the 20 last-min hols MoneySavers section there is a part on car hire excess insurance. I recently rented a car and paid the premium to cover it, I need to hire one again for a longer time however the premium to reduce my excess to 0 has basically doubled. Has anyone bought car hire excess insurance before? I want something but I can't afford to pay the car hire company's premium as its basically paying twice for the rental.

Any advice greatly appreciated.
