What recourse do I have when unauthorised funds are taken from my account

Hi,
AirBnb recently cancelled a booking we made and gave us a full refund and suggested we find a new place. So we did.
A few days later we got an email saying that they had reactivated our original booking and suddenly I find I have been charged again for the original booking. We emailed them to explain that we did not authorise this and they said no problem, we will refund you. But they only refunded us half the money - basically as if we had made the decision to cancel the booking.
Two weeks of emails back and forth and we still do not have the full amount due to us.
What options do I have on the table? I did not authorise this second transaction and am now over £1000 out of pocket. Airbnb case handlers seem to be unable to grasp the simple fact that they cancelled the booking, not us. We have lot of evidence proving that they are in the wrong.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Raise a chargeback with your card provider.0

Can we also 'sue' them for taking money from my card illegally? If I did that it would be theft wouldn't it?0

If you can spare the money if you lost0

No. You get your money back.0

Would probably go down the small claims court route I would imagine. I don't know if companies can legally do what they have done though?0

OP has asked about this on another thread0 -

As zx81 has suggested, raise a chargeback. Why start taking about litigation when you have other options to recover your money? Court you be your last option -not the first.0 -

It would only be theft (or more accurately fraud) if they had done it dishonestly.
What you are alleging is 'breach of contract'. i.e. They have charged you money which was not agreed in the contract.
If you make a chargeback claim (or even a claim in the small claims court), you should refer to 'breach of contract' rather than theft.0
