Letter from Lowells advice please?

Hi all,
I recieved a letter today from Lowells telling me that they purchased a debt from a water supplier in March 2014 that I am responsible for. The amount is £70. They say it relates to my time at an address. I rented the address they mention from Sept 2011 to Sept 2012. I moved out but as far as I am concerned I settled all utility bills and all was fine. I have never heard anything until today's letter.
I have never missed a payment for anything to my knowledge but through passage of time I have no paperwork of proof of payments made woith respect of water from 2011/12. At the time I was living with my ex and we were paying from a joint account which has now been closed for years and I have no details of.
I'm shocked at recieving this letter and unsure what to do. I used to regularly enter water readings through the company's online service so do not know how this could have happened.
I'm unsure if this will be a statute barred debt due to the time passed.
Can anyone advise me what I should do? I have seen the "proveit" letter but if I send that then will I have acknowledge the debt?
I should add that this year I obtained a mortgage and at the time my credit score was 999 with no trace of this matter.
Thanks.

Best do it now and get it over with.
For £70 it won't go to court, but dealing with it will get them off your back.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
