Handing in notice after holiday

I have also known references not to be taken up for some time after the person has started their new job - ridiculous, I know, but my point is you can never be 100% sure how these things will be handled.
I don't know that it is so ridiculous - for example first few days when someone has handed their notice in if working, you are going to be sweet and say nice things as don't want to rock the boat and actually feel pretty vulnerable even whilst knowing you are likely soon out, you don't want to have everyone hate you as after all you are leaving and can be both sad and happy - but what if new employer gets the most glowing reference in them early days, what them stops leaving person who in the know of reference received, saying up yours and maybe worse, not showing up to work for remainder of notice period.
Only today I had formal acknowledgement of my Saturday resignation and contact begging me to work the weekend which I've caved in over and come home a little early (made it work for me at same time as least now I don't have that compensation lets work at old employer one day and next day start with new) seems I'm going to leave as crazily as I re started with this employer.
:):)
I no longer care about the reference. Does seem the best thing to have done handing in notice before rather then after holiday. And you are so right I agree, you can never be sure how these things are handled.0
