Start/Stop is a system that is used to save fuel when the car is warmed up, battery is fully charged and A/C is switched off. When you, for example, pull up at the lights, select neutral, handbrake on and foot off clutch the engine will STOP and when you depress the clutch the engine will START. You will know if you have it because you will start the car by depressing the clutch and then pressing a button marked START.

But start/stop doesn't activate straight after you've started the car ... it's only after driving, coming to a stop, engaging neutral and taking your foot off the clutch that it activates.

But maybe the issue is that the stop/start is faulty, and is stopping the engine when it shouldn't.

That's entirely possible. But given that the OP didn't even know about Start/Stop then I'm guessing there's probably nothing wrong and this is a PICNIC error ... Problem In Chair Not In Car. :)

Thanks for clearing that up for me, i can confirm that there is no start/stop facility on the car.
  • why noy buy a cheap obdii reader from amazon for £3 download torque and see if there are any stored fault codes on the car.
I have a vauxhall insignia stop/start your symptons are not related to that, it sounds more like lack of fuel getting to the engine.
if you sit with your foot and rev the engine does it stall then or does it just stall when idling?

Thanks for your reply, I have just purchased one. no the car drives perfectly its only in idle when it stalls, when the car dyes it sounds like if the car is out of fuel and is like a hunting\surging noise coming from the engine.
