Thanks for all the replies. It's a scary business buying leasehold.
I've spoken to my solicitor and apparently they'd have to back up any reasons to increase the service charge with sufficient proof for the increase. (?)
Obviously I'd rather own a small house freehold but don't have the funds. I'm hoping to get a job which will allow me to sell this flat and get a small mortgage so we can move on in a few years.
The flats are brand new in a converted building (just 6 flats) so I've checked they meet all building regulations and that I'll have warranties to cover things like the heating and hot water system. Hopefully there won't be any need for major works!
I don't trust my decisions at all and it's hard when you've had someone else in control for 20 years, plus I have no-one to talk stuff over with. I do feel stressed and uncomfortable about the move but it's the best place I can find in the area so I really hope this goes OK. Another bad decision will be the end of me.
Thanks again for all the input here. I do appreciate it.
