Unadopted roads

I wonder if anyone has any advice on this please? I live on an unadopted privated road. I have read that when you buy a property on an unadopted road, you own the road outside your house. I'm asking because occasionally people park outside my house (not my neighbours), and I wondered if I'd be within my rights to ask them to refrain from doing so, as it's a private road? Any help would be greatly appreciated

What does your paperwork from when you bought the house say?

ok there's a few things to bear in mind

1: there is no automatic ownership, you may own the road as a group of homeowners, or you may not own it at all.
2: You are within your rights to ASK anyone anything at all, but even if you own the road, you would struggle to demand they do or not do something.

It doesn't make any reference to the road actually, but the outline drawing on the deeds suggest that I own half way across the road.

Do other neighbours feel the same as you about the situation?

You could look at collectively erecting a polite notice advising of private road...no unauthorised parking....
That might help but the reality of it is whoever parks there is "never going to be more than a few mins"...."is doing so because there is nowhere else to park"...or a whole host of other excuses.

Its expensive to stop people from parking on private roads...and it can turn into an obsession for you if you allow it to get to you.

if you can identify a particular offender then perhaps you could take it further but the cost will always be yours.

perhaps a polite notice that is visible at the entrance of the road or infront of your property if you wish....

So presumably you own half the road and the house opposite owns the other half....or is it a case of you must allow an access route across or over the road to allow vehicles to get through?
I suppose the question is who owns the other half of the road and do you both need to allow a right of access across it?

I have a house where the road is owned by several houses and whilst we choose to park on one side of the road it's a collective decision by all to do it that way because we must also allow access to another joining road...

I assume it's the former. It is not a dead end, and leads to another road which is not unadopted.

You may find yourself along with the other road owners in the very privileged position of having to maintain a road for others to drive over and have little control over any parking issues!!!

If you want a little more clarification on your rights over the area many solicitors will take a quick look at your deeds and documents and give you an initial assessment over what you could install as a deterant to parking....usually this takes the form of an initial quick free consultation, sometimes it can prove useful to help put things into perspective for you as the homeowner.
