Registering passport to fly to spain....

My family and i are flying to Majorca next wednesday (whoo hoo!) and my mum noticed something in the paper last week about having to register your passport number on a website for all trips to spain.

Mum didn't read the full thing or keep the paper (!!!) so I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the hell she was on about?! Don't want to not do it incase it causes problems!

Thanks

You will either have done it when booking or will do it when checking in. It's not a problem Don't worry about it.

Spain are implementing a similar system to the USA, whereby airlines have to gather more information on passengers and pass it to the authorities before the flight departs, all in the name of security.

As dzug said, don't worry it will be done at check in, and from now on most airlines will collect the data at the time of booking (to speed things up at check in). Additional data is full name, passport number and date of birth. You probably won't even notice any difference at check in as they can get all the info from your passport, although i assume they will inform you the data is being passed on.

Are you sure it can be done at check in ? I'm sure I read that it has to be done before and that you can be turned away

Yes it can be done at check in but best to do it before - better for all - just get the travel agent you booked it through to deal with it - they should already have done so in fact , but if they haven't asked you for the info or photocopy of the passport they clearly haven't

What airline are you flying on?

With many airlines you can go to their website and add it to your booking.

But remember that if you are going to check in online and print a boarding pass, you need to add the information to your booking first and then print your boarding pass.

    From Flyglobespan

Passengers travelling on flyglobespan flights to all Spanish airports will be required to provide the following additional information to meet with the Spanish Governments new entry procedures.

    Full given names
    Surname
    Nationality
    Date of birth
Travel document number - e.g passport number.
As this information will be collected at check-in via a swipe of the passport through a computer, there is no disruption caused to passengers or check-in queues and no information is required in advance of check-in.

    Hi,

we're flying with Ryanair in 2 weeks and just received an email from them with a link to my booking to add all the relevant info, passport no. nationality etc.

We booked our flights back in January before the announcement was made that the extra info was required. Might be worth checking with your airline to see if you can add it before you fly or if it's done at the airport.

  • Thanks for all your replies. We booked with Jet2 holidays and they haven't asked for anything. I think to be on the safe side I will call them and see if we have to do it!

    Thanks again

No need to call them, this from the Jet2.com website:
I have heard that the Spanish require passengers’ info including passport number, in advance of travel. When and how will you ask me for this information?

From 13 June 2007, as part of measures to ensure aviation safety and security, the Spanish Government requires all airlines to provide compulsory information on passengers departing the UK for Spain. This information includes full given name, nationality, date of birth and passport number.

Jet2.com are complying with the request for API (advance passenger information). We are investing in new technology to collect the necessary information at check-in and we do not, therefore, anticipate any extra queuing times for our passengers. Passengers using our online check-in facility will be able to provide their data at the "fast bag-drop", if they have baggage to check-in, or at the departure gate, if they have hand baggage only.

However, it is sensible to remind all our passengers that check in for international flights closes strictly 40 minutes prior to departure, by which time you must have completed the check in process. We continue to strongly recommend that all passengers arrive at the departure airport no later than 1 hour 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time in order to allow sufficient time to complete the check in process and clear Airport Security. If you are planning to travel with excess baggage please allow extra time.
