Insurance premiums (discusion)
It's only after answering another thread I realised that when I had my 1st car Vauxhall Viva 1256cc back in the 80s my insurance premium is not too different to what I'm paying now for a 2 litre petrol turbo from new, £ for £ .
Pro rata though I was paying 10 weeks wages back then for a policy and now less than a weeks wages.

Late 90's, I was paying around £600-£700 a year for a Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia. I had nil or very low NCB and was in my late teens.
Fast forward to this year and I paid £295 for a 2011 Audi A8 3.0 TFSI. Nearly 40 years old with 14 years NCB.0 -
I started off paying about two weeks wages now it's two days.0

Around 3 weeks wages in 1992, couple of shifts more than covers it these days.0

This is just oar for the course with most things.
With the notable exception of house prices and rent, can anyone name anything that has got any more expensive in real terms over the last few decades, or at least anything that isn't a luxury.
People expect life to get better and easier, it does but not as quickly as many people would like.0 -
1988 age 17 paying £130 a year for a 3.5L V8 Rover SD1 which had 160BHP apparently.
2017 age 9cough) paying £130 a year for a 2L MX5 Sport that has 160BHP.
However what is different is that back in 1988 I was on a YTS getting £29 a week and now I'm on over 20 times that.People expect life to get better and easier, it does but not as quickly as many people would like.
Actually it does but we choose to make it more complicated by buying more stuff. Take a look at what outgoings you had of your 18 year old self or what they were when you first got the keys to your own front door and what you have now. In my case mobile phones, pay TV and the internet didn't exist and not that many people had house phones either. There are four bills I have now totalling £100 a month which I didn't have back then.0 -
In 1964, aged 18, I paid £11 a year for insuring a 1937 MG TA. That was about a week's wages at the time. A sports car today, even an old one, would cost an 18 year old a lot more than a week's wages.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

In 1967 aged 21 I was driving old bangers for about £15 a year third party, about a weeks wages. Got a chance to buy a frog eyed sprite for £100 and asked my broker for a quote before buying, it was £100 for third party so I passed.
Would have loved an MG TA don't know how it was only £11 in 1964 though unless you were out in the countryside, I was in the city then0 -

Stamps
1980: 12p first class, 10p second class
2012: 60p first class, 50p second class
RPI-only increases would make those prices 43p and 36p
The trend is continuing (now 65p and 56p).

I lived in the heart of Somerset. The MG looked good on the outside, but a well maintained tractor could overtake it on a bad day.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0
