Have you had the car from new? Not saying it is but if you havent always owned it could be because of a accident repair have you checked the door foils behind the door trims are intact that can lead to water leaks if they arent .0

No it was new (we are the 1st owner).
Anyway - went to pick it up last night and it was still smelly (although the smell of the air freshener made me gag!).

Maybe you had two issues.
The door seal leak (perhaps now fixed) and bacteria in the aircon....0
