PeacefulWaters - I know they all do current accounts - but do they allow 2 people with different names to open one?

    Yes. It's 2017 after all.

Go back to HSBC - simply ask to open a 2nd current account in both husband and yours name (joint) for the household bills.

There is absolute zero reason why you can't do this, or why the bank would ask you to close or transfer your current accounts you have right now. If they still insist, ask to speak with someone else or a manager as it's complete tosh!
