Cable staples for electrical cable

We have just moved into a house which is severely lacking in electrical sockets and the 1 double socket that does exist is invariably always in the worst possible location.
We will get an electrician in to put in some extra sockets in pretty much every room in due course.

In the interim we're using a couple of extension cables but it's not great having them trailing around the place.
I was going to buy some of the cable tacks and fix them along the skirting board to tidy them up. But when the Virgin installer installed the box upstairs he used a cable staple gun which was a lot quicker solution.
Is it possible to use these staples on electrical cables (approx 6-8mm?) and if so does anyone know which brand/type of staple & gun is best to get? Since we have this problem in every room except the kitchen it would be a LOT of the little plastic tacks to buy (and laboriously install!)

Thanks
PP
