Drinking water filter taps - which one?

I've previously been happy drinking tap water. SWMBO has drank bottled water for a long time. In an effort to cut down cost and wastage, I've suggested the idea of fitting a filtered tap, which swmbo has agreed to.

We used to have one in my parental home so I recall the need to change cartridges every six months.

Are there any reputable or preferable brands?

If SWMBO is daft enough to have spent a fortune on bottled water to drink at home and to think that tap water needs filtering, just tell her you've fitted an in-line filter, bang around a bit with some pipework under the sink one afternoon, leave a brochure lying around and the job's done. She'll fall for it and you've saved a lot of money.

:eek: I'm not the original poster's swmbo, but when we did a blind tasting with the kids we decided we preferred filtered water over tap, boiled & cooled, and a selection of bottled waters. Maybe try using a filter jug first though in case it's not liked?

Chlorine, fluoride and now chloramine which does not dissipate like chlorine can do, are all harmful to health in various ways including upsetting the balance of bacteria in the digestive system.

Fluoride lowers fertility and births per woman in ALL countries that it has been introduced below 2.2 children which is the rate at which the population is maintained. It suppresses the immune system - think cancer, it's damaging to the IQ and intelligence and it can lead to brittle bones among other things. These compounds are all halides which are known to affect thyroid function and there has been a subsequent rise in obesity since the introduction of fluoride. People are continually distracted to other things being responsible while population growth is quietly kept "under control". In china they ban people from having too many children but in the west they deceive people into thinking that these poisons are useful for something - yes stopping an exponential growth in the population! The western governments are so full of lies and deceit, at least the Chinese government is up front about what they are doing even though many resent it.

These chemicals have no useful purpose in the human body, they are anti nutrients which is being mass medicated onto the unwary and unknowing public. Even the BDA says that fluoride is not useful in the public water supply and they prefer fluoride toothpaste instead. Not something that I use personally but at least with fluoride I can make my own choices which I cannot do with water.

I do not know whether any water filtering can remove chloramine, there are filters which can remove most chlorine and fluoride. I am not talking about the rubbish brita toys which do not publish filtration data.

Reverse osmosis is about the best available but does cost more and filtration rate is fairly low.

Filtering water for boiling veg is fine if you do not want the chemicals combining with your veg. Just because millions do it does not make it the healthy choice, it's just like using a microwave oven which is only safe to heat water....an expensive method.

There are a few different brands that supply the filtering cartridges and systems. There is the Brita stuff Franke make some and taps, Freshwaterfilter which I purchased my tap and 2000 system from which has stainless steel housing instead of the newer plastic ones. I would not use plastic. Some will fit them or you can fit them yourself which I did.
They do not sell many taps on the site now and the ones they do sell I do not like. Mine cost less and looks more robust and functional. You would probably better off looking elsewhere for the filter taps with 3 water supplies/handles, maybe eBay, unless a small separate filter tap is what you want, which would not fit well under a kettle. If you decide to stop using it you could hook up a barrel of beer to the filter tap. lol My kettle fits under my tap, either on the sink or in the basin. The separate filter taps are smaller and not as tall which could be a problem.

I too drank bottled mineral water before I purchased a filter system but transporting large bottles and storing them was a nuisance and worked out more expensive. It's worth finding out whether your water company adds chloramine to your water as a disinfectant, mine does.

I would recommend looking for a tap with 3 on/off handles so that hot/cold can be used separately and combined as some look like the hot/cold is done with one lever.

Tap water doesn't NEED to be filtered but if you live in a hard water area it definitely makes a difference to the taste, most noticeable when making a cup of tea. We currently use a filter jug but plant to get a filter connected directly to the water supply when we get the kitchen re-done in a few years time.
