Can anyone recommend a basic printer that will do decent documents, with out the need for colour.
One, where the cost of replacement inks, isn't horrendous.
I have a Canon MX 310 which is great, but even supermarket own brand cartridges to me are expensive.

This one, it is really reliable and very cheap to run. Brother are outstanding in the cheap mono printer range and have been for awhile.0 -
on any Canon printer just turn off printing in colour
Tick Greyscale(black) printing only

Just as @ballyblack mentions you can turn off color printing on printers. What you need to look for is a printer with cheap cartridge. Look online for different printers that you might be interested of. Then search for their cartridges and look if they are cheap. Then stick with the cheapest option.0

I use a Samsung M2020 mono laser printer, fast printing, no drying up of ink with resultant clogged heads and compatible toner cartridges are cheap.
They were a Which magazine recommended printer too.0 -
Depending on your level of printing have a look at this - I picked one up for £25 in John Lewis (price matching Sainsburys at the time) and at £2 a month with HP Instant Ink for the level of ink we're likely to use I can't see an issue yet
