VHS to digital

Hello :)

I would like to put some old videos onto YouTube and would appreciate some advice. I've done a fair bit of googling, but happy for suggestions.

Background:
I had six old VHS tapes of home videos that I wanted to keep / future proof. I thought if I put them on YouTube and if I make them public I would always be able to watch them, even if I lose my YouTube password.

One of them was transferred from cinefilm to video years ago by my dad (he took it to a photo shop). I asked in Max Speilman if they could transfer them to DVD and they could do it from my local shop and said they'd send them off to be done. I thought if they're being sent off, I might as well send them off myself so I looked online and found a company who would do that for less money than the shop. I thought I'll send two off to start with and see how I go.

I got the two DVDs back and found out I couldn't upload them to YouTube, as they were not the right file type. I googled, and ended up downloading a converter, converted them to AVI and uploaded them. All well and good.

I sent the next two DVDs off, but when I got them back, this time they were protected so I couldn't convert them to the right file type. I googled again and downloaded a protection remover, but found out that I would have to pay for the protection remover, as the videos were longer than 5 minutes.

So, now I have four VHS tapes (two of which are now also on protected DVDs) that I would like to get onto YouTube. Now when I go onto the VHS conversion site, there is an option to get them on a memory stick in MP4 format (which I believe can be uploaded to YouTube?), but it is more expensive than just getting them on DVD.

I'm thinking of just paying for the four VHS tapes to be put onto MP4 format on that site or another, and then putting them onto YouTube that way. It's done then. Is that the right decision, considering I'm not a techie? TIA.
Are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
