Help please! Lost key to petrol cap..
...can I get a replacement and if so, any ideas where (in Bedfordshire) ?
The cap isn't the original car manufacturers. It did have 2 keys - one broke months ago (and was thrown away) and today, the second one fell off my key ring. Have retraced steps but to no avail. Checked inside car, coat, bag, etc. No luck.
Have seen a company who don't cover my area that take an impression from the lock and can make a replacement key. Is this the best way or as I've seen suggested elsewhere, break the lock with a screwdriver and just get a new cap and keys?
Need to sort before I run out of petrol
Any advice, help, ideas, would be gratefully received.

Hi-- a garage - or any good high street locksmith will get it off for you. They are actually very simple inside.

Try a key from a similar car, for example VW ones used to fit other VW cars.
Phone up dealer ask how much a replacement is, it shouldn't be too much prolly about 15 - 25 quid.
Then You might try using a large- 10mm wide- flat blade screwdriver stick it in and turn like it is a key.
You also might ask in a motor factors if they have one cheaper than the dealer price which will fit.0 -
Thanks for your ideas - I've made a little progress tonight.
The company outside of the area have given me the name of a company who do the same in this area. So I will ring them tomorrow morning.
I also phoned a well know High Street locksmith/shoe repairers/key cutters who want £99 call out charge - to tell me if they can/can't do it because it's not a door/boot/ignition key. Have crossed them off my list, not very MSE!
Now if I can undo it myself with a screwdriver, I can replace the cap with the original car manufacturers one, as I still have it and the door key (of which I have two
) works that.
Fingers crossed I can sort by latest at the weekend.Back on the DFW Wagon:

So saved some money (and stress) !
Thanks everyone for the advice. Going to get a spare key cut at the weekend - lesson learned
