Thank you everyone, I really appreciate this information. I'm completely new to electric heating and there seems to be a lot to it, especially if you want to save money. I was just thinking about hot water? Occasionally I like to have a hot bath in the evening especially in winter, can the hot water be stored in the tank if heated the night before or do I just have to pay for that on the higher rate?

    Good evening,

I'm potentially moving into a new property in a month or so and starting to worry about how much the energy bills are going to increase. The new home is electricity only as there is no gas in the area. I've read it can be 3-4 more expensive than gas. I live alone and it's a 3 bed mid-terrace 17-18th century house. Can anyone living alone tell me how much they spend on electricity a month in a similar sized property?

    Thanks,

    Nathalie

Ask the existing/previous tenants what their typical bills are and/or refer to the EPC

...However, I don't think Economy 7 will be cost effective for me, because as I'm a freelancer that works from home, i'll probably be using most of my electricity during the day when it is more expensive on Economy 7....

Hopefully you have storage heaters that take advantage of low rate E7

You can only really make the assessment you have once you know how much electricity you use according to both registries, and then have consulted a comparison site.

It seems you're renting, so you probably cannot change the meters (or will be charged if you do)
So apart from a very limited few suppliers, you will have no choice than to be on E7.

If you don't want E7, then I suggest you look for another property.

This doesn't make sense as previously you wrote

Only leaves me to wish you good luck!

There is also a wood burner, not sure how cost effective this will be to use but could potentially heat the house reasonably well.

Depends on the wood burner and its efficiency but I didn't use my gas central heating at all last winter given it was so mild and my stove pretty efficient and effective at heating the fabric of the house.

Now is the time to get your chimney swept (reminding myself too!), and to stock up on wood if you are going to use it. I never buy any and have learnt to scrounge and use a bow saw, electric chain saw and splitting axe! I save on the gym too!
