Gelert walking shoes from Sport Direct

4 weeks they lasted, less than 300 miles walked and worn through the soles already

Normal wear & tear I was told for shoes in that price range (£39.99 reduced to £19.99)

Avoiding going back so that I don't get arrested for shouting abuse at the staff (not their fault)

What did you expect from a pair of £20 shoes from Sports Direct?

With that level of walking it pays to invest in a reliable brand.

That is wear and tear, 300 miles in 4 weeks is just over 10 miles a day. Even expensive (£100+) running shoes it is recommended to replace every 450-550 miles so why you'd expect cheap budget walking shoes to cope with that level of walking is a bit baffling. If they were coming apart at the seams it would be different but the wear pattern is purely from the friction from so much walking, from the wear pattern it looks like you have high arches and they have worn unevenly towards the outer edge so maybe a professional fit for the right shoes for your foot type and gait would help the next pair last longer.

(I'm also doing the 2000 miles in 2017 challenge on here and am on my fifth pair of shoes so far this year and will be needing a sixth pair very soon because of similar wear to yours)
  • 300 miles in 4 weeks for £20!!!!

Is this the first Sports Direct bargain?

Your feet are quite important if you do a lot of walking. (300 miles in 4 weeks).

  • Gelert used to make decent quality stuff. It is one of the brands that Sports Direct have bought up though. This is their modus operandi; they buy brands with a half decent reputation when they are struggling; rebrand their usual cheap !!!! with the name and then sell as much as they can before the reputation bombs; obviously much cheaper than before and with fake reduction labels on.

What you bought was a 19.99 pair of Chinese walking shoes, and they performed as expected for such.

I used to buy the Merrel? Mid hiking boots for everyday wear. I would just go in and buy the same item each time no need to try them on.

Then one day i picked them up and thought that feels light, checked the size and yep right size. Then started checking them. All the padding had gone. Utter junk, seems they were bought out/taken over around that time and now rubbish.

I did the same with Regatta's from go-outdoors. Found something i like and bought several pairs at a time. But they stopped that model and the replacement is cheap tat. they remove all the padding and thinner soles.

Bring the old ones back and increase the price if needed...

They weren't walking shoes, they were standing still shoes.

Looking at the photo, the soles don't even look like 'proper' walking boots to me.

Scorpion is spot on. This grubby company has a policy of buying up companies that have had a good reputation but are struggling in today's market. They then have the name copyright and have cheap rubbish manufactured in the far east using the respected name and sell the stuff though their stores.

These are examples: Donnay, Slazenger, Firetrap, Dunlop, Everlast, Kangol, Karrimor and Lonsdale.
