If I download Google Chrome can I switch back and forth between GC and IE quickly and easily, or am I stuck with it? I'm trying to use an app which isn't supported by IE, but I don't really want to switch to GC permanently. Thanks.

Yes, you can have multiple browsers installed and then you choose which is the default one - this is the browser that will open when you open an html file or a URL in another application. You can switch the default browser back and forth as you need.

Yes, as John said you can install and use as many browsers as you want. You can leave IE as your default and still use Chrome, just ignore or close when Chrome asks you to change your default.0
