Ipod crashes my computer! Help!!

Ive just got an i-pod nano and i went to load all my music on to it but when i connented to my computer via the USB port, my computer restarted itself and just kept booting up then restarting again!! Therefore i cant charge my ipod or transfer ant songs onto it. What could be the problem? Any ideas?
Any help is appreciated as im dying to use my new toy!

The computer is about 4 or 5 years old (not much memory left about 30 Gigs left) OS is windows XP and i was using the USB sockets at the front of my computer. Sorry i dont really know that much about the technical side of computers.0
