Contactless

Can someone explain the card rejection process please?

Have recently got a 0% purchases card from TSB which turns out to be contactless. Waving it at various machines in stores results in rejection, but I have had an online transaction accepted, so it must be working OK. TSB say they have no record of rejecting any transactions and the stores don't know why it isn't being accepted. Welcome to modern technology at it's best. ;)

Did you try using PIN entry instead of contactless? Usually you have to do that for the first transaction on a new card.
    Evolution, not revolution
  • No, I just use another card.

I thought contactless meant you didn't need a pin?

Contactless does mean you dont need a pin but the card may need to be used at a ATM first - no need to withdraw cash, just get a balance.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Hi,

    agree with the above.

My new contactless card still has sticker on it, which says,

'For security reasons, you will need to use your card in an ATM before you can undertake a contactless transaction.'

So, as already suggested, try that.

I have a TSB contactless card that has been rejected a couple of times in the last week.

It's annoying because on both occasions the machine bleeped and I assumed the transaction had gone through. I suppose they have random security checks at times because the vast majority of transactions go through without any problem.

Usually have to make a purchase using the pin code first then will work contactless after that.

yes first transaction with new card needs to be with pin (security measure)
in addition, with my card (not TSB) after 4 contactless transactions, the next must involve a pin (which was useful when my card was stolen as there was a limit to how much damage could be done)

Admittedly this guidance may be intended for TSB contactless debit cards (it's in the current account section of TSB's website), but it states:

"Please note: if you have a brand new or replacement contactless card, you'll need to use your card with your PIN before the contactless function will work. This can either be an ATM transaction or purchasing an item in store. This is a security feature to make sure that no-one else has got hold of your card."

Welcome to modern technology at it's best. ;)

Trouble is, technology is always restricted by the limitations of the user.
  • Be nice if they said that on the letter I got and/or when I activated in branch!

Me - So that's it then?

Branch Manager - Yes, you can use your card now.

Me - I was told I couldn't activate the card in branch but had to do it by phone.

Branch Manager - I have done it on the system.
