removing windows multi-boot start up

A few months ago I put new disc drives in to my pc and installed a new copy of XP on to them. I left the old drive with the old xp in the system and now the PC gives me the option to boot from either copy. As I no longer boot from the old drive I want to remove the option screen and have the PC automatically boot from the new windows. Is it possible to do this, I have done lots of searches but can't find anything.
Nothing to see here, move along.

  • Hi Coveredinbees,
Yes you can remove the operating system that you don't need by doing the following:-
Boot your system to windows XP.
when you are able to see the desktop, right click on the "my computer" icon to go to properties, Or if it does not show at your desktop, Go to start.. in the start menu, Right click "My computer" Go to 'properties'

Select the advanced tab, On the Startup and recovery, select settings...
At the system startup section, Ensure the Default OS is set to Windows XP (the one you want to start) from the drop down menu. Uncheck the option for "Time to display list of OS"
Click on the Edit button, .. In the notepad file that opens, you will have two lines that contains [ WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" ] one of these lines will relate to your old XP installation and you can delete it. If you are not sure it is best to exit withoug saving and leave it. If I can be of anymore help please let me know.

By editing boot.ini and deleting the appropriate line in the [operating systems] section. Take a backup before changing it. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022.

Make sure you delete the right one and that the multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2) part of the default= line matches the OS remaining.
  • Thanks

I unchecked the box in the advanced properties and it now just boots from the correct drive. I left the note pad screen as is so if I need to boot from the old system I still can (that is until it gets reformatted).

It's just knowing where windoze hides the stuff you need to do these things

  • In boot.ini timeout can be set to few seconds, say 1 sec so that you are not anymore waiting to choose.
