bt bills

Hi,
I have a new BT line and on BT together option 1(4 p per hour in the evening and weekend). I used it for last 2 months to dialup to my univeristy network which is just a local call. I did those calls only in the evenings and in the weekends. And after every one hour, I disconnected. Now I am surprised to see my first bill. They charged nearly 1 p per min and that is regardless which day or time i have called. My bill clearly shows I am on together op 1.

I called them up which went to an Indian call centre. The lady said it will be looked up within 2 weeks and I will receive a letter. The time has passed and yet I havent received anything from BT. Now, I can see online even my next bill is getting charged in the same rate(1 p per min).
Even if they correct this bill I have to appeal again for the next bill.

I have set up a DD and this is the way they return the favor. Do they do this intentionally, isnt there a way to put an end to this cheating??

Welcome to the MSE forums eager2know.

You obviously missed the part about the 4½p for up to an hour evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls applying to voice calls only.

The easy workaround is to sign up for a 1899, 18185 or 18866 account make those calls for 5p each (any duration at any time).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • The Bt call plan doesnt state "voice calls" although it says "exclusions apply" one of which is internet calls. My question is what constitues an internet call, I was calling a local number with my modem. My bills though categorize them under "local" and not under "evening and weekends".

Besides if these are the special data calls why I was not made aware of this charge rate, I cant find anywhere a charge rate for data calls. All along I was thinking they were evening and weekend calls.

The real question is were they voice calls or were they internet calls? They were the latter.

Arguing that they were local calls is not going to get you anywhere (they may have been - but they were not local voice calls).

Time to move on and put it down to experience. My suggestion as to how to avoid such charges in the future stands.
