Went there is March and stayed at a Travelodge type place in Caissargues

this was about 40 euros a night and fine if you have a car. It is in a trading estate near the motorway south of the city so not particularly lovely but I was just after a clean comfortable bed.
Nimes itself is lovely - lots of Roman things to see, arena, Maison Carre etc. and a few miles out is Pont du Gard a very spectacular aqueduct. Arles is nearby and another pleasant town as is Aigues Mortes a lovely walled town. We also went to the the Camargue to see the salt mountains and flamingoes. This is a good place for flamingoes

They have bull fighting in the Nimes area which I was keen to avoid but they also have courses camarguaises where the bull is the hero and this involves people trying to grab ribbons from their horns with lots of jumping out of the way. The bull is not harmed and killed as in ferias.
If you are not hiring a car public transport is a bit thin on the ground except between the main towns. You would also be better off with a hotel in the city centre.
The airport in Nimes is lovely and has about three flights a day so not very crowded.
Here's a few photos of the area

wow, thanks fr detailed reply! We will need to stay in Nimes itself, as we will be reliant on public transport. Had a look online for hotels all seem around the 60 euros mark, which i guess is quite good for 2 people, but still too expensive for us! Youth hostel are my next line of enquiry! Thanks for the photos, it does look lovely. Really excited, as i never thought i'd be able to afford to go away....November wins...a book, a designer handbag (worth £550 :T) and a game. I agree, Nimes is a good destination for a weekend.
Do a search at www.accorhotels.com www.kyriad.com to see if they have any promotions and www.hotelscomparison.comPosts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
Cheapest hotel I could find is Formule 1, there are two in Nimes, 30€ per room per night. But not en-suite, you may like to pay a bit extra in one of the other hotels mentioned.
If you need to hire a car the cheapest is from HyperU or SuperU supermarkets, from 20€ a day all in. But you need to get there from the airport.
We loved Nimes, try the tourist office to see what's on. http://www.ot-nimes.fr/english_nimes/agenda_nimes/week-end_a_nimes.php?genre=&limit=0
Sorry, don't know how to do that as a link. Have Fun.0 -
Thanks, you've all been so helpful. Had an online look at the youth hostel in Nimes, its had loads of great reviews, although a bit of a trek uphill from town . They also have double rooms available costing approx £70 for 4 nights. Starting to think that i could actually pull this off!!

BTW the bus from the airport goes to the main Nimes railway station, you could get a train to Montpellier which is a bigger place that might have more accommodation choices.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0
