Hi,
I booked a hotel through booking.com a couple weeks ago using my barclaycard credit card, all good at this point.:o

2 days later I decided to cancel my reservation free of charge as advertised, a refund was processed and issued straight back on to my card but £74.00 short.I contacted booking.com who said they will investigate.

I just logged onto my online banking and have noticed the following charges;

I've been charged £32 for making the inital booking and again £32 for the refund:mad: so in total £74, is this right as I made the booking in the UK through booking.com.

When I made my second reservation which was directly though Hilton website it seems I paid in dirhams ( dubai currency) as I've been hit with another £32 transaction fee:mad:

I thought these fees kick in if your outside the uk?

Not enough information - what currency did you pay through Booking.com?
Is the booking site based in or out of UK?

If it's a non-sterling transaction fee(?), Barclaycard will charge this for purchases in a foreign currency regardless of where you are.

To avoid this you need to use a card that does not charge such fees, which you should have anyway if you are going to travel overseas. For example, the Barclaycard Platinum Travel Card.

    £32 x 2 isn't £74. What's the rest for?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Thanks for the heads up, thats probably what these charges are, I've got barclays platinum card but it's not a Travel Card. I'll have to apply for one.

@ Elsien, apologies your right it's £64, My refund by booking.com was short by £74. I had £64 charges slapped on to top it of which was levied by VISA.

@edicky overseas transaction fees even though the websites I was booking from didn't notify me the transaction would be overseas.

I've just got of the phone to Barclaycard and they willl refund the £64 charges back on to my card aswell as the £74, shortfall on the refund. Lucky I checked this.

Going to check out the barclays Platinum travelcard.

Booking.com do not charge your credit card. The hotel does.

When booking a hotel abroad, where the hotel is charging you, almost always they will charge in their local currency. Booking.com will show a GBP price, as they know you're in the UK, but in my experience they will show a note by the GBP price which states you will pay in the hotel's local currency and the GBP price is used for a guide only.

The charges you've experienced were from Barclaycard as per the conditions of your card. As you say you need to get a card tailored for travel which charges no fees on foreign transactions.
