    So import duty doesn't take account of shipping etc., but VAT does?

    Is there a totting up process for gifts/personal imports? Or is it on a per-shipment basis? (OP says this was the 4th pin exchange this month).

    In which case (assuming the packing/shipping note was correct) it sounds like someone* in RM may have made a mistake, perhaps having seen several of the same type of thing to the same recipient in a short time and thought they were trying to work around the system.

    * It's possible that the same person will handle packages for delivery to the same area, so possible that they'd see a pattern in a short time.

    Think you mean HMRC ;)
    Charges are levied at Mount pleasant (still?) not once items arrive for delivery.
