Alliance & Leicester Mortgage Protection Policy

Help needed please. I have been going through very old paperwork and have found a possible PPI claim. It goes back to 1993, my partner and I took out a new mortgage with Alliance & Leicester and we were told we needed a Mortgage Protection Policy (Life Assurance Plan) by the mortgage adviser in branch. This was taken out by them for us with Scottish Amicable for which we paid £31.38 per month, our regular monthly mortgage payment included Building and Contents Insurance and Mortgage Payment Cover (Redundancy cover) . I have all of the original paperwork. We had the mortgage for about 8 years and did cancel the policy in 2001 a few months before we completed our last mortgage payment as we paid the mortgage up early
A couple of possible problems - my partner has since passed away - this was a few years after we had paid our mortgage up on that property. That property was in joint names so how do I stand with making a claim on my own now? I have moved to a new area so I am unaware if Alliance & Leicester tried to contact me about a possible claim as I have seen online that the companies were supposed to do?
I am assuming that I would now need to go through Santander if there is a possible claim, I’m not certain myself that there is a claim as it was a life assurance policy but it did seem that we were railroaded into paying it through them at the time - any advice will be much appreciated.
