Fence paint - colour matching?

I recently got a new garden gate and it's bare wood so it needs painted. I'm not sure how to get paint the same colour as the rest of the fence. It would be a waste of money to do the entire fence as there's nothing wrong with the rest of it, and there's an awful lot of it so I really don't want to.

I took a guess and bought a tub of Cuprinol but the colour isn't quite right. I've heard of paint matching. Does anyone know how I do that, and where?

Unless you know what was used for the fence you will struggle to find an exact match.

Even if you do, colours get discontinued so may not be available now.

the type of wood your painting will also determine how the colour comes out so if the gate wood is different to the fence wood the same colour may not be a match.

The colour also changes with age and the effect of the elements.

It might be easier to paint the gate in a contrasting colour or a deeper shade of the same colour.
