Can I demand a refund?

Yesterday I bought a aerosol spray of Virbac Indorex Household Flea killer spray from my local Vets.
My wife was buying exactly the same aerosol from another vets and had sprayed the whole house before telling me she had done so.
I took the tin back to the vets I bought mine from and asked for a refund and explained why, as wife had bought the same thing.
After speaking to the head vet, the nurse came back saying 'no' as they don't know if I had kept the tin in the right conditions.
Can i demand a refund/are the any rules that say I can't ask for a refund/do they have to give me a refund?
Each tin cost just over £25 so we have spent over £50 in total between us.
Any info would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

There is no Statutory right to a refund for change of mind for a face to face purchase unfortunately.0

....however the other vet may be more accommodating perhaps?0

He's not going to take a user can back.0 -
Should have bought from Amazon for £11.27!0

I don't think the suggestion was to take the used can back, which would indeed be a pointless exercise. However, taking the unused can back might work (although would be a slightly morally dubious act).
Alternatively, keep the can for future use, I can't imagine flea powder would go off very quickly.0 -

....of course he's not going to do that. There's two cans one used and one unused...has the penny dropped?0 -

And the retailer for the unused can has refused a refund.
Are you suggesting the op should be dishonest?0 -

No you can't demand a refund, no there are no rules to say you can't ask for a refund, no they don't have to give you a refund.
It was your mistake, you made the purchase face to face, you have no rights to a refund, you are reliant on goodwill. If this isn't offered, tough luck, stick it in the cupboard for next year.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
