I notice that if I go for separate gas and leccy suppliers the total bill is about 3.5% cheaper on the cheapest tariffs. Is it time to revamp the MSE comparison engine to look for these circumstances too?

(As an aside my 12m fix is up in October and currently the cheapest deal is a shocking 25% more expensive  - I can't see anything in the current energy market prices compared to a year ago to justify this but I suspect it is mostly down to the threat of political intervention in the market, threatened because 70% of people can not be bothered to spend 10 minutes a year looking for ways to save £300 on their fuel bills)
    I think....

I think that in October last year, energy providers had not yet fully passed on the increase in wholesale energy prices, which were mostly caused by a rise of the cost of natural gas in dollar terms, and of course by the post-referendum drop of the pound.

I've made several attempts to sign up for the energyhelpline collective deal with EDF via the link in the MSE News Article above offering £34 cashback. When I've filled in the online application & clicked 'Check My Details' to progress I get to a page with the message NOT FOUND press the Go Back Button. Doing this takes me back to the start of the blank application form every time. Any suggestions please?

Request the cashback as a cheque.

It took me numerous attempts (having had to fill in all the details each time) before isolating the problem to the bank account details for cashback (even though they were exactly the same as for the direct debit). By selecting payment by cheque I was able to complete the application and got confirmation emails from Energy Helpline about the switch and the cashback.

In my case I only wanted gas as the deals on the electric were more expensive than my current deal (I also have found that dual fuel deals turn out to be more expensive than using separate suppliers) and in my area SSE was cheaper than EDF for our usage. I had signed up for the UK Power Collective but they did not allow a gas only switch. I'd not signed up for the Energy Helpline Collective but when I saw on the MSE info that they didn't check email addresses I thought I'd give it a go and can confirm that it worked OK.
