Standing Charges

I am in the process of swapping energy suppliers, but am getting seriously bogged off by standing charges.I use approximately £2.50 a year gas, but I have to pay nearly £85.00 extra in standing charges and VAT.
Is there any way round this rip off?

The only way round it, is to find the cheapest supplier to suit your usage in your region.

High users, suit low standing charges as it works out cheaper overall

Choose a supplier with zero (no) standing charges, IF you are a low user. Try Ebico/RHE

    Really £2.50 per year gas?

Go look for a supplier with no standing charges!

Go to a good switching site, and put in your real annual gas usage in kWh. The cheapest deal is the one you want. Just check the details of the tariff and it should show no standing charge.
Some sites require a minimum kWh number for energy so you may have to increase your number used slowly to get it to accept a value
https://energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk/ allows low energy used numbers (I just tried it with 100kWh of gas and got back deals starting from £3.47 a year)

Only Ebico I think for zero standing charges. Will easily be your cheapest option on gas..Standing charges for BG on a vacant property I have is £15 a month for gas and electric..Filling in Ebico s usage form on starting with them is a bit odd as it does nt seem to accept zero usage so I have accepted a very low monthly direct debit to reclaim it later when I leave or start to use energy.

For 100kWh of gas per annum

Solarplicity 2 Tariffs "Fair Market Price" or "Fair Market Price Variable" Zero Standing Charge £3.47 per year.

Ebico Tariff "Zero" Zero Standing Charge £4.91 per year

Glide Tariff "Gas Tariff" Zero Standing Charge £5.20 per year

Standing charges aren't necessarily a rip off.

Suppliers have fixed costs that are given to them per customer, it doesn't matter how much you use.

the fixed cost elements that suppliers have no control over are rising a lot faster than the variable costs. Mainly due to government 'initiatives'.

The SC is irrelevant. What matters is the total cost per annum. Any comp site will do the maths for you.
As mentioned above, if your gas usage is very low then Ebico is probably your best bet.
It's not a 'rip off'. The SC reflects the cost of maintaining the network, reading the meter, and billing you.
