Thank you all for so many helpful comments.
I have now asked him to provide a revised schedule of work with dates for completion and an invitation when this is ready for us to sit down and discuss. My preference is indeed that he does finish the project. At least then we can both show that we have learned from our mistakes and go better equipped to the next project.
Fingers crossed for now.
I have to say asking for a revised schedule and holding off a meeting until that is provided is rather unhelpful and potentially confrontational.
A lot of small building companies are not great with the paperwork side of things. Far better to have the meeting now and agree the revised dates verbally, to be confirmed in writing by yourself, either in site meeting minutes (as good as a contract instruction) or just an email.
Unless you can meet this guy face to face and get these problems ironed out it could very quickly spiral out of control. Just make sure you take notes and confirm everything that has been agreed in writing.0 -
Yes, this. ^^ Speak!
Nothing is going to get when you wait for him to do a load of paperwork. It would be far quicker to talk and then get on with it.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Thanks yet again!
We spoke briefly earlier when I returned to the flat and bumped into him, descending a ladder. He had been working on the roof and had not received my email.
Anyway, following your wise counsel and observing for myself that he was looking very stressed, I remarked that it was probably a better idea for us both to sit down and work something out. He was in agreement but too busy today as work needed to be done before the scaffold removal due this evening.
Tomorrow is another day..0 -
I think I must be missing something, why would you want to carry on doing business with someone who disappears for 2 weeks in the middle of a job.
There has even been a suggestion of tea and cakes!0
