12 pm

A lot of comps end at 12 pm - sorry if this is dim, but is that noon or midnight? Googling seems to come up with different answers. I usually assume it's midnight since that seems a logical time to end a comp but found one had closed recently when I went to enter it in the afternnon. :undecided

    There is technically no such thing as 12am or 12pm as they are literally midnight and midday. 12.01am is one minute past midnight (ante-meridian) 12.01pm is one minute past midday (post-meridian) but by its nature midday cannot be either before or after midday! So they should either say midday / noon or midnight rather than giving a time.
    That's why a lot of comps often say they end at 23.59 on a given date, to save confusion.

    In my experience spreadsheet software classes 00:00 as am and 12:00 as pm.

    Another ambiguity is that if a competition ends on Monday that could be midnight at the start of Monday or midnight at the end. (I would assume the end.)

    Most of the competitions that end at midnight, I find state midnight or 23:59.

    00:00 - Midnight - 12am
    12:00 - Midday - 12pm
    Thank you to everyone who posts competitions and good luck to everyone who enters.

    I always presumed morning is AM, so once we got to 12 noon that is afternoon so 12 noon would be PM.

    12 midnight is going back into morning so that would be AM.

    Using Microsoft Excel

    Only the first column has values - columns 2 & 3 are display formatted.

    Result - Noon is 12pm, midnight is 12am

    One thing is for sure if we are confused in here, then some of the folks hosting the competitions will be confused too.

    So the moral of the story is to try not to end date ;)

    As far as the MSE Comps board goes (and moving comps to GO) I've always presumed that if the title has 12pm in it, it ends at noon. If there is no time in the title I presume it ends at midnight on the date stated, so there's no real need to put 23:59 in the title :)

    Same, this is the first time I've ever actually heard a 'quiry about it.

    12am = midnight. 12pm =midday. :)
