Is it worth fixing the bodywork of my dented/scratched old car?

It won't look as good as a professional job but you should be able to make the car look a lot better. Sounds like you've got nothing to lose by giving it a go.
If it were my car I'd get the local dent company to knock out the dents and follow up with a diy spray job on the scratches.
A good 30 years ago, I used to do the same thing.
I bought the equivalent of one of these (still have it, and have used it from time to time, doing small repairs for folks)

A spray gun like this will give professional results. I must have done around forty or so complete resprays.

Could also consider a vinyl wrap although unless you diy it would cost more than the cars worth.0
