Best flooring for small shared hallway

What is the best, durable, dirt-hiding, easily cleaned flooring option for a 3x1 metre shared hallway? As it's such small area, price is not such an issue.
Can probably rule out ceramic tiles, but other than that, open-minded.

Why rule out ceramic tiles?

I'd have thought some tough tiles, like quarry tiles would be ideal, get them in a dark colour like red/black so dirt doesn't show, easy to clean etc.

A decent quality laminate, something like QuickStep. Ranges from £13 to £26 per m2 - I'd go for something in the middle of the range (I recommend the Impressive). The whole lot should be doable for less than £100 in materials - for that area it might be worth seeing if you can find somebody with some offcuts of underlay rather than buying a whole roll.

well we are getting Victorian mosaic tiling for our pathway and we were going to run it through into the hallway - but we were warned by the in-laws that they would be expensive to lay properly as any unevenness in the underlying boards means they will be prone to cracking. Not sure why - they must have had some bad tiling experience I suspect.
