  • Well, they're the experts!

It is one of many reported studies, and the paper is merely reporting it - I am sure the scientists that carried out the studies are experts.

At a guess, the poster that claimed this is not a fruit fly.

Pending confirmation from the poster as to their fruit fly/ human status, can you share some human data?

Nope. I have better things to do - do your own research if you are that interested/determined to prove me wrong.

I am sure they are, and I am sure the actual study is very interesting, but newspapers do tend to report this kind of thing in rather overblown terms.

I very much doubt that an irritating noise from a hot tub is solely and directly responsible for a diagnosis of cancer.

Developing cancer and fighting it's spread is probably linked to a person's mental state to some degree. However, there are so many other important predispositional factors, it would be impossible to prove a causal link in the manner first suggested.

Perhaps that's the thinking behind expressions of scepticism here, not total disbelief.
  • Would love to have an update. Neighbours (with previous for being extremely inconsiderate) have just installed one and we can't bear to go into our garden for incessantly screaming children and loud music. So far have heard the hum but can't say it's noticeable (yet). Don't recommend reporting it or talking to them - any neighbour disputes have to be declared when selling your property. Can anything be done?

We're thinking about getting a hot tub in the future. How do we make sure we're not going to be a nuisance for neighbours if we do? Is it a case of looking for certain features or what? (I'm talking about the residual noise really, obviously switching off bubbles and stuff after a certain time makes sense)
Despite my name, I'm not a student any more

Consider the garden size and site the tub away from neighbouring properties.

In my opinion you should also be looking for somewhere where the garden is not overlooked.

When you are looking for a location for the tub sit in the garden and think how you would feel if you heard bubbles and residual noise the other side of the fence and didn't have access to the on/off switch.
That will soon tell you if you are too close.

So maybe the best advice might be if you think you have a near neighbour, they are probably too near for a hot tub!

Yes, but it's much more complicated than that, not a simple causal link.

Maybe if you think the matter is simple, it's you who needs to look at medical studies some more.

Triple-glazing and earplugs, given that you don't want to talk to them or report it.
