£10K Family hatchback
Hi, I am in the process to buy a car as my 08 Fiat Bravo is starting to be quite expensive to fix. I am looking at family hatchback with:
-16/66 Plate
-Decent spec (Cruise, Air Con, Sat Nav)
- less than 15K miles
-maximum £10K
I have been looking at both petrol and diesel since I do around 15/17K miles each year with 50% in town and the rest on both A roads and motorways, plus a yearly trip to the continent every summer. I am also planning on keeping the car for 7/8 years so I am not worried about residual value.
I have shortlisted a few, mainly Peugeot 308 1.6 disel Allure and a few Astras. Is there anything worth checking on those models when I go and test drive them?
I was also looking at the service intervals and it seems that every car I have shortlisted will need a service pretty soon. Shall I push for the dealer (Motorpoint) to do the service or is it better to get a discount and arrange the service myself with peugeot or Vx directly?
Finally, is there any other model worth considering a part from 308, Astra or Focus (Which I don't really like)?
Thanks

Is that the 1.6d engine to avoid like the plague? If so, avoid like the plague.0

that sort of money is very close to £11k for a brand new SEAT (VW) Ibiza FR.
or £12k for the SEAT (VW) Toledo xcellence, which ive just bought.0 -

I would still buy a Golf though.
Care to guess how many Golfs there are on Autotrader that meet the OP's requirements?

If you want a nearly-new full size hatchback for under £10K then honestly there is really not much choice. I would be inclined to up your mileage/age requirement and get a better car than a newer car. The difference between a 1 year old car and a 3 year old car will be neglible, yet due to how fast depreciation kicks in I'm sure you could get a much nicer car.
For instance if you look on autotrader, £10K, <40K miles,
years old, you could get:
- 2014 Alfa Romeo Giulietta, 10K miles
- 2014 Golf, 20K miles
- 2014 BMW 1 series, 30K miles
- 2014 Mazda 3, 15K miles
- 2014 Mini Countryman, 30K miles
There are plenty of examples of the above cars for £10K.0 -

Depreciation alone in the first year is likely to be several times what you'd spend repairing the Bravo. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks a lot for all your replies. Will definitely look into getting something older but better as someone said.
Regarding fixing the Bravo I think it will need a new gearbox soon, hence the search for a new car.“Barcelona would struggle in the English Premier League as they’ve never played the likes of Stoke…. Lionel Messi would struggle in a cold night at the Britannia Stadium.”0
