Chicken pox - holiday insurance

Hi,
Has anyone ever experienced a holiday where your child is ill with chicken pox and isn't able to fly when originally planned. Can you claim for this? My son became ill on day 6 out of 12 so I had to stay on a few extra days whilst me husband and daughter had to return on the original date. Completely spoiled our holiday as he had to be kept away from people so he had to eat in our room. Holiday rep didn't do a single thing to help, didn't even ask if we were ok or if there was anything he could help us with so totally left to sort it out ourselves with the insurance company who made it more stressful by dragging their feet leaving me not knowing where we were going to stay. They said we were only covered for room only enevthough we'd been on an AI holiday and with a contagious child I couldn't just pop to the shop with him and prepare something in our hotel room. Hotel room didn't do room service either. They insurance also made a mistake booking our return flights meaning we'd have to stay an extra night, even though there was a Jet2 flight we could have gone on. In the end I booked the flight myself to ensure we got home as soon as possible.

You don't have to lock yourself up in a room if you have chicken pox, yes avoid School or work but that doesn't mean lock yourself up

I know its probably too late now but anytime ive claimed on travel insurance I have had to pay out then claim it back rather than relying on them to sort it out,

Im not sure if you can do anything about it now but you should try and claim the cost of the flight back but given they booked you one it may be a difficult fight, What does your policy say about extending stay and what you are entitled to? Ai would be a stretch I would think
  • It was a buffet restaurant and the hotel didn't want him in there. There were a lot of babies and pregnant ladies. We weren't locked away in our room the whole time but we had to stay away from people as much as possible. It's an airborne virus so you do have to keep away to prevent spreading as much as possible.

The insurance has already covered the hotel bill. I have the flights, drs and other costs to claim back which shouldn't be a problem.

It's compensation on the holiday I was wondering about. I know you can get compensated on flights delayed 4+ hours so wondered if there was anything for illness such as chicken pox. I know a girl who got pneumonia whilst abroad and I think she got some money back.

I always thought that once the spots showed, you were no longer contagious??

End of the day, compensation for what exactly? You had your holiday

Partly true. You are supposedly most contagious the few days before the spots appear, but remain contagious until the last spot has crusted over.

We used to have chicken pox parties as kids, if one in the class went down with it, we were all sent round to play so we all got it the same time

I contracted in 72, I was so ill I couldn't leave my bed for days. The light and sunshine just hurt me so much. I remember being off school for 2 weeks whilst my sisters didn't lose a day
  • It is a shame the hotel and rep were not more helpful about food given your circumstances.

There is usually a modest "hospital confinement" benefit which would pay for each day inside. You can check your policy, but it is unlikely to extend to being unwell at your hotel.

Some cruise covers will pay a better daily amount if you are physically confined to your cabin. He wasn't anyway.

It is a fact of life when you are ill be it at Christmas or on holiday - it mucks things up. But, insurance is typically designed to mitigate unexpected loss which it has broadly done. So beyond the two scenarios above, I'd doubt there is any benefit payable.

As the insurer had booked flights - they may not have been able to cancel these and are not likely going to pay twice.

You would have been paying for your own food at home. However there is usually an allowance for someone who stays to accompany an ill person's delayed return. You could try to press for receipted subsistence costs.
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.
  • Hi original poster ? I know this was a long time ago and you may not even see this ! But what was the outcome did you get money back for the loss of your holiday?
The same is happening with my son right now we had an amazing couple of days and now he is quarantined and we cannot use ANY facilities here it is heartbreaking and I’m thinking surely our insurance should cover loss of holiday for medical reasons as that’s why
    We have purchases insurance ?
    Thank you

Check your policy wording to see what cover you have with your own policy.

    Different policies cover different risks
