Transfer of money , between accounts is done in minutes (even seconds) with a few exceptions (I've found transfers into Co-op and some TSB to Tesco at weekends,to take hours and days resp.)

However, I have done phone transfers ,with a promise of hours, which arrive within half an hour

You pretty much just have to open a joint account with him. If you are able to go to a branch and talk to them about it, you and your son will just sign a form and it'll be put in both of your names. Or contact them over the phone and they'll probably send you the forms.

My grandma recently wanted to give me access to her accounts in case of an emergency and the bank created a joint account

This will create a financial link...

Just get third party access on your current account which allow your son to take money out and therefore no need for a joint account or registering LPA (if you feel you are not ready for this step)
