New Build all electric Flats

Watching a programme about the 'Landlords moving in' and saw an all electric heated flat that was full of damp as the lady living there was unable to keep her heating on all the time due to inability to afford the bills.

Does anyone live in this type of flat and do you have the same problems. The landlord informed her that she would have to keep the heating on low all the time to allow the walls to keep warm to prevent the mould problems. He even said he would pay the extra that it cost to allow her to stay in the flat as it was her home and she did not want to move.

Surely with adequate ventilation a new property should not become so bad

It is possible for new build flats to get damp during construction - particularly new plaster. It can take a long time to dry out.

The solution is normally a dehumidifier running 24/7

In the programme concerned, the landlord had fitted what looked like a dehumidifier and the cost of running it had increased the electric bill by 40%.

In all truth, the lady just couldn't afford to live there but didn't want to move either.

New build flats are very well insulated sealed boxes and getting moisture out can be a real problem.
  • The problem is that nobody seems to want to open a window anymore.
