It is now stuck in gear, so driving to the garage is out of the question. Reversed onto the drive and now it will not let me change gear (gear stick is stuck).

With the engine switched off can you take it out of gear / move it through the gears?

Is it that the lever is stuck ? If so, that might be because the engine is trying to push the wheels round ; like if you push hard on a door, it is difficult to turn the handle.
I'd suggest jacking up one corner, to get one of the driven wheels just off the ground, then rocking that wheel to and fro while someone tries to ease the gear-lever out. If it's front-wheel-drive, you are OK, rear-wheel-drive you'd have to release the handbrake and so need chocks.

You'll probably need it out of reverse anyway, to get it on a breakdown truck, although there are some little trailers that might do it.

Yes the gearstick is now stuck in reverse gear, so I cannot start the engine without the clutch pedal down otherwise the car tries to move (haven't actually tried reversing as it is up to my house wall and I have enough problems with the car being broken without knocking the wall down too :D!).

Then it seems that the clutch is OK, the gearbox is shot.

Thank you for all the advice - it turns out it was both the gearbox and the clutch .

I now have my car back on the road and my finances are £800+ lighter.
