Windows Not Loading

Having loads of problems with my laptop - a Toshiba Satellite.
First it wasn't loading any icons on the desktop, or letting me do anything. A message would then pop up to say windows wasn't loading, but it wouldn't let me do anything to sort it.
When restarting it also won't go into Safe mode. (Have tried F8 and F7 as I read somewhere Toshiba sometimes change it to F7).
Finally I left it a few days and tried again, and now it will load the icons, and will after a very long time will open browsers, but everything is incredibly slow and mostly not responding messages pop up.
It won't let me back up my recent files either, as it's just so slow.
Often the background will go white as well.
No idea how to begin to fix this or what to do!
Any ideas really appreciated please?

I forgot to add if I try and do something like click on the start menu it just shows the loading symbol all the time."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0

I would test the hard disk as listed here http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/items/faq/5960

What is the Part Number? It is written on the label at the bottom.0

The part number is PSKRLE-00C00PEN
It's not letting me click on the start bar to do that check.
It takes forever to do anything. I was able to open a window and move a couple of files. But it's constantly saying not responding, and Windows not responding and going white.
At the moment I'm trying to back up a few things that haven't been done (but of course really important things) as a priority. But once it goes white it takes forever to respond again."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
When you next have the laptop on, press CTRL + ALT + DELETE and select to open the Task Manager

It would let me do control alt delete and would open the blue screen with the options, but wouldn't let me select task manager."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0
