MP3 players

I'm looking for an mp3 player for my child. It must have a screen so iPod shuffle won't do. Speaker would be nice but not essential. I saw lots on Amazon for under £30 (AGPTEK, HccToo, Peficecy) but are they any good? Ideally looking to spend under £50. Can you please recommend something?

Consider a mobile phone instead of a dedicated mp3 player.

Without a SIM the battery often lasts a lot longer than with a SIM. And you can stick a lot of music on one and choose from a wide range of player software. If you dont like the interface on one player download another.

+1 for Sandisk. I've had the Clip+ for a few years and its been excellent. There is free 'hacked' firmware from rockbox.org that you can download for lots of extra useful features if you wish to.

I'd also recommend one of the little Sandisk players, very good at just being simple, robust mp3 players.

Have you thought about a second-hand one off eBay? You might be able to able to find a bargain... especially as everyone is ditching their MP3 players and using their phones instead.

I have used a Sansa Clip in the gym for years. Fabulous little item. No moving parts. Lightweight. Nice display. Tiny clips to your top. Fabulous sound quality. I used to have a giggle at all the people with massive ipods strapped to their arms. I always used to wonder if it was a weight to help them exercise?

Thanks all. I've read some reviews and Sansa Clip seems to have been a very good mp3 player, sadly the new models Jam and Sport are not of the same quality.

    That's right.

Sansa say it's not their fault though.:)
They have had to use a different chip in the Jam and Sport because the chip makers (inconsiderately) stopped manufacturing the chips that were used in the earlier Sansa Clip models.

"Are they any good" is a bit subjective - after all, the quality of the MP3s being played will massively distort perception, as will the presence or absence of decent headphones. (We jacked an ipod through the car stereo & reverted to the incar CD, as MP3 quality was *that* low.)

How old & sensible is child? As there is a case to be made for buying a under-a-fiver ultra cheapo (without screen) & seeing if they manage to know where it is after a fortnight. Or getting a second hand nano from cash converters if they're old enough & wise enough to appreciate it & look after it & generally can be trusted with it.

Or try to source a Sansa!

He's 5 and quite sensible. He is using his dad's iPod Touch just now and he loves to pick the songs he wants to listen to and he likes watching the screen as the song plays. And he loves checking how long the songs are. He can listen to music literally for hours just looking at the screen. So a screen is a must.
