What to do with damaged garden wall (with pics)

What should I do with this garden wall?
Has previously had render on it that was damaged taking out ivy which had over run the entire garden. Never done any brickwork before but have attempted to take the render off and do some pointing this afternoon (see wall area in middle of pic) - dont know if this is the right thing to do?!
As you can see a lot of bricks have very little mortar and there are a lot of damaged bricks - see either side of my pointing attempt this afternoon.
Ideally we'll use this wall for an elevated bedding plant area.
Thanks in advance

It's render - absolute nightmare to get off in places!0 -
SDS drill with wide blade will strip whats's going to come off easily, point-up as you've been doing, then paint over with exterior finish. A breathable paint might be best, but they aren't cheap!0
