I didn't pay in full at the time, because I didn't have. Balance in full-but could meet my minimum payments. I didn't Because I was mentally unwell. And yea, after viewing my income and out goings, ushering me into a 6 month agreement, is exactly for their own financial gain and taking advantage of some one who is unable to act for themselves.

For example, if it was a severe learning difficulty, some one may not even have control of their own finances, and I probably shouldn't have at the time!
I'm not talking a bit of depression here. I was severely mentally unwell. So if, for example, I was so unwell that I couldn't care for my children or myself, or attend wirk, and the police labelled me a vulnerable adult-I was in no position to make a decision like this, with or without all the facts-but I was without them. Hence why yes, I feel it's not been done correctly. Because had I been sound of mind, I wouldn't have done this. And financially, since I could make the repayments, they should have said no.
Like my bank did! Because yes, for some reason, still unknown to me, I tried to do this with my bank as well.

Because I could have just walked away and not paid a penny? That simple. People do it every single day.

    I don't think I would give you a mortgage!

Hang on OP you say you could've paid it off? How did you figure that out, but decided to offer £50pm? Sounds like a one sided story you're using to suit you.

I bet if at the time they asked for more, you'd be here saying they took advantage of you and left you with no money for food etc.

OP - this forum doesn't deal a great deal in tea and sympathy. It's much more about cold, hard facts. The debt free wannabe forum is more sympathetic, but the advice is likely to be similar.

Time is a great healer with things like that. Six months out of an arrangement to pay isn't very long. Once you get to two years your options will open up. Getting advice from a broker who deals with adverse credit would be sensible as they would have a better idea of your options.

Walking away altogether would have been much worse. A default, which could lead to a CCJ, would have a bigger impact and would last longer.

Keep doing what you can, build your deposit, pay things on time, make sure you are on the electoral roll and it will improve.

You asked the credit card company for help in paying your debt, they helped by allowing you to pay £50 a month, which you agreed to. I don't understand how you can say they took advantage of you ? I see it as the opposite.

Any future lenders need to be aware of this arrangement which is why it's noted on your credit file, it happened, it may happen again, there's nothing wrong with whats been reported. As far as a mortgage goes, It's a waiting game now, as long as you dont suffer any more mental health issues which affect your finances. Making an arrangement to pay indicates you are struggling, whatever the reasons.

So yeah, mental health did play apart, my finances did not.

The reason I felt I couldn't afford of (I absolutely could have) was because my sons father stopped paying child support.., again after 9 payments in 22 months. Not like I simply over spent what I didn't have.

Ive not really found this a very helpful, sympathetic, understand or nice experience on this site tbh.

Thanks for pretty much just giving me grief about an episode in my life I cannot even recall properly and it's now ruining my life.

I don't think you are being very fair to people on here. The responses you got are reasonable, even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear. I can sympathise with you, mental health problems are a massive issue and not given the attention they should be.

However, what you seem to want is a re-writing of history by the credit card company. You need to think about whether that is a fair thing to expect, as well as whether it is reasonable to accuse them of taking advantage of you.

Your credit history is there to guide lenders on the risks associated with lending you money. For whatever reason you got into financial difficulties and/or decided not to repay what you owe in the way you'd agreed. In some respects it is better not to know how it happened, but for your history to just show it did happen.

Let's say your history is wiped clean and you go ahead with the mortgage. In a year or so your son's father could stop paying the child support again. If you cannot keep up with the mortgage payments you could get evicted and, even after the house is sold, you may still be in debt.

At that point you may come on a site like MSE and complain that the mortgage company should never have given you a mortgage because of your prior mental health issues and problems repaying your credit card.

That's why you have a credit history - so the mortgage company will know whether or not it is likely you will have problems repaying what they lend you. The specific circumstances may be a one-off and never happen again. That would be more likely if for example you'd broken a leg and hadn't been able to work for a year.

So for all its faults the system is reasonably fair - it could be far worse.

I hope you stay healthy and manage to keep your finances under control now. It will get better and you will be able to achieve your dream one day :)

Which with what they've done to my credit report, I may as well have done.

What's done is done, the flip side to the issues around mental health is that whilst that is a consideration in terms of why you got into a payment plan situation, it also indicates a potential higher risk in future to many lenders.

Also in your OP you state that the situation was to your providers advantage, however they have presumably suffered from reduced repayments for some time and this has cost money in itself.

What you can do is apply for your credit reports, and for those which record this arrangement to pay add a note of correction to state the circumstances. It won't necessarily solve all of the issues but will out the situation into context.
  • Sparx...Hang on, at no point I said I had then whole balance just sat there but refused to hand it over. I clearly state I could have met the minimum payments. That is completely different. Also, I never said they left me without food. What I'm saying is, they allowed me to enter into agreement, not giving me full facts and really when perhaps they shouldn't have after an over view of my financial state. They do have a duty of care over people. Same as gas and electricity companies who tell people what to pay so they don't get into unmanageable debt!
I don't understand your comments very useful, so I don't understand what you're doing on my thread if you can't be helpful or factual and not just insulting me.

Worried Jim-I haven't asked you for a marriage. And why would you not give me one? When I made attempts to pay, rather than just walk away? And cleared the balance as soon as I possibly could. Does that make me a bad person? Again, not a helpful comment giving any advice, just being rude.

Nebulious2... I am not a 'debt free wannabe'. I am completely debt free, with a 20k deposit and earn almost 40a year. But thank you for sign posting me to a site you believe may have been more fitting for me. But thank you for the yet of your post.

Thank you EachPenny, but it won't happen again, as I get a full war pension now, and my child CMS comes as a DWP payment and I have continual treatment now. So things are extremely different to this time last year.

Well, I can say I have a little more understanding from this forum, but found the majority quite rude and unhelpful.

Thanks to those who took the time to explain things.
  • Thank you, that's helpful. If it cannot be removed for the reasons explained, I absolutely feel that the circumstances should be put into perspective.

Just hold on a minute, Campol. This site is called MSE, money savings expert, and you will get advice on financial matters, which is where people's expertise lies.
If you are having issues due to a bout of mental illness during a period of your life, might I suggest that you post on a suitable forum, i.e. one that deals with such issues.
The way people interact with financial companies is governed by a set of rules, and we cannot know how these companies should/will alter their behaviour with someone such as you. If there are rules for this kind of thing, we don't know them (well I don't anyway).
A mental health forum would, I suggest, be more familiar with the way things work, and would be able to give far better advice than we can.
That is not being unsympathetic, that is just my opinion on what might be best for you.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
