Experience of John Lewis carpets (or flooring) and fitting service?

Options
We are looking at a 50-50 wool-polypropelene 21oz loop carpet at £12 / sq m:

First I don't even know if this is a decent price, never having bought carpet before. It's certainly at the cheaper end of the John Lewis range.
Second has anyone used their fitting service and how was it, on price and quality?

Just a note on their fitting service: they charged £70 to move 2 sofas about 6 feet while fitting a living room carpet. Then £37 to lift the old carpet and £45 to take it away...
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Fitting is down to who ever turns up on the day, as it's JL you should get someone decent though.

The fitter is generally self employed, so don't think you are getting a "JL" fitter, they could be fitting carpets for carpet right too, but I would expect JL to only use the better fitters so you should be ok.

As the other poster points out, the fitter makes their money with all the extras they can charge for, so if you don't want to be hit, make sure the room is empty.

As for the carpet, it really is at the lower end, you are paying a big premium just to have the word wool in the name, I would drop the wool and go for 100% synthetic so you can up the weight as 21oz is thin as thin can be. You really want to be aiming for around 50oz if for living room/hall, or stairs. Even for bedrooms 21 oz is thin.
  • We have just recently purchased carpets from John Lewis but on day of fitting, the measurements, taken by John Lewis employee were incorrect. Everyone makes mistakes - it’s how they rectify it that makes the difference - so far we are disappointed but will keep site posted.

We had John Lewis to supply and fit our carpet and found no problem with them. The fitters moved our 3 piece suite and dining room table and seemed quite happy to do so. We were having both rooms carpeted so had no where to move them too. They did one room and moved them to the other while they did it then swapped them to the finished room. The even put the back to the original places before they left. We did not buy the underlay from them because it was cheaper and better quality online from elsewhere, Their estimator told us how much to order and the fitters fitted in at no extra cost.

JL carpets is great if you just like paying over the odds for it. You know the use subcontractors for all of this.

We bought one of their special buys and the same carpet was more expensive in Carpetright. Probably could have found cheaper fitters but if there is a problem they would probably blame the fitting,

  • I've just posted my experience, last few months, of buying flooring from JL, in Consumer Rights Board. I've always bought flooring and curtains from JL, didn't mind paying the extra as the customer service was excellent. But not now. I've been and am still going through hell with them. Taken them ages to admit that the flooring has been cut incorrectly, the fitters damaged my door as well. Trying to get this sorted has almost had me tearing my hair out. I wrote to the Chief Exec recently and had a call from a senior complaints officer but even she couldn't sort it, it's down to the Manchester offices who now look after all the flooring & curtains, you only order in store, all admin is handled (or not in my case) by Manchester. If you google them you'll see that since Manchester took over, there have been masses of complaints, one of which is that you can never get through, you're just on hold. I was actually told by one of their staff that the reason I was on hold was because they were having so many complaints, complainers couldn't get through!!!

Avoid them like the plague, customer service with JL is now a joke that ain't funny!
