Cold storage is data stored offline and only available on request (usually for disaster recovery or a system failure) while the instant storage will be data hosted on a server as normal. They specify that they're using AWS so I assume it's just AWS standard and AWS Glacier they're providing a front end for:

A lifetime cost would put me off because the very nature of this service, even if they were doing all their own archive storage has a monthly cost but worse when they're entirely relying on another company which they have no control over.

I got that email too. Presumably because I saw something about the free 100GB which it seems I signed up for but haven't really used.

I'm always wary of these cloud storage deals because if the company goes bust or the Feds step in as with Megaupload your data is history. I really don't see any way that I'd pay. I only use the free options if they are very convenient and more like backups solutions such as Dropbox where I work on stuff on one machine and it automatically gets mirrored to others and stored in the cloud to boot.

It may be that zool is excellent but so far I haven't bothered to investigaed it beyond uploading some stuff I don't care about anyway.
