scottish power credit

hi hope someone can explain something for me. im with Scottish power and pay by direct debit. last week my monthly payment went up from 50 to 58 a month. today I got 69.99 credit put in my bank account from them. im confused if my dd has gone up to cover costs how come the 69.99 credit has gone into my bank. also if they sent you any credit you might have will I not have any extra money in my Scottish power account to help cover winter payments. sorry to sound silly but its my first time I have had utility bills. thanks

    I'm with Scottish Power. My guess is and note that it is a guess, that they have obtained a meter reading and have automatically refunded a credit balance. That is however pretty much not my experience where my direct debit payment is reduced in the light of a credit balance.

    If you are registered for the online account management you can get more info from that and you can also adjust your own direct debit payment. So if you are concerned that you are not going to have enough credit for the winter months, increase the direct debit payment.

    Do you read your meters regularly and send a reading to your supplier, ideally every month. Likewise do you check your on-line account regularly to make sure that your monthly readings are being recorded and used. You should also be checking that your payments are covering your consumption.

    If you dont do these things then you can't keep track of what's going on.

    When I was with SP they kept faffing about with my DD amounts which ended up about 3 months out of sync with my consumption whereas if they left it alone it would have balanced out at the end on the year like it should have done.

    Since then I always monitor my consumption against my estimates and don't allow the energy company to alter the DD unless I specifically request it.

    I'm sorry to hear of the confusion caused by your refund and direct debit increase.
    I have included some information from our website to hopefully help explain why you received a refund and your direct debit was increased.

    At your annual review if your account is in credit, you shouldn't need to do anything, as we'll automatically refund this to you as outlined below.
    - If your annual review is based upon actual meter readings and your balance is greater than one month's payment value or you are over £75 in credit, we'll automatically refund your balance during your review.
    - But if your credit amount is less than one month's payment value or under £75, we'll carry it forward into next year's payment plan.

    You can control what happens to your credit balance at the time of your annual review by selecting your refund preferences within your account.

    We use your current account balance when calculating your Direct Debit.
    If we refund any credit now we may have to recalculate your monthly payments to ensure you don't go into debt.
