I keep getting the message "Firefox has prevented the outdated plugin 'Adobe Flash' from running. This usually happens when viewing on-line news which then results in the screen freezing. Can anyone help?

Go to the Adobe Flash website and update your old version of flash player, don't forget to un-tick the 'Optional offers' before you click on the 'Install now' button.

    Here you go, go here:
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer

You don't need the optional offers.

I've tried this several times. If I un-tick the optional offers, which is 'McAfee', the download doesn't work, but if I leave it and click the download button it downloads but doesn't install. For some reason Firefox doesn't seem to like Adobe.

Some time ago Firefox took a lot of flak when users were being infected with malware via dodgy flash based websites. So they took the stance of blocking flash if it was outdated.
When people don't understand something. they blame the first and often most illogical thing.

Firefox however works perfectly for me when updating flash, so there's something else wrong there.

Are you opening the flash updater from your download folder? it doesn't just happen automatically, that would be stupid.

I had to update Adobe Flash on Firefox about two weeks ago. It was after the latest Firefox update(they go through automatically), no problems for me.

After saving the downloaded file and then double clicking it as directed, a box appears with the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path,or file". How else am I supposed to get this thing installed?

Go to "Help" - "About Firefox" - and a window appears with the Firefox version you are running. Is it 54.0 (32-bit)? That is the latest version, if you don't have it you need to update Firefox.

If that window does not appear, you will be offered the update. Take the update and click "Restart Firefox."

Also take a look at this:

Adobe Flash is still OK for Firefox.
I think this job really needs

I think OP will need to temporarily disable their anti-virus, one common issue that causes "Windows cannot access the specified device, path,or file" is AV software blocking the file.
