New graduate help

Hi!
I did a quick search to see if I could find advice for someone in my situation but had no luck, so thought I'd ask.

I've just finished my degree and as with a lot of people am overdrawn and a bit short on cash. I start a new job in 4 weeks time and have a contract to prove this and my salary, ~£26k.

I'll be getting paid at the end of august and the few weeks preceding that are likely to be tight as I'm moving house so have deposit and double rent to pay etc.
My thought was to apply for a 0% credit card and use this simply to tide me over for those few weeks and pay it off in full come September. I'm part of credit club and inputting my salary + the credit score it gives me, I have 100% eligibility for some of the top cards (subject to checks etc obviously).

My question is can I reasonably put down that salary and will credit card providers want to see payslips rather than a contract? I called virgin to ask them and they said that I wouldn't be able to, and that 'if' they wanted proof they would want payslips. I assume any card provider would give me the same response?

Anyone else had a similar situation?

Thanks!

No. You can't use that salary as you're not earning it.

With a thin credit file and no job, your options are severely limited. See what you can earn between now and your job starting, and cut costs elsewhere.

You can't use it as your not earning. It could constitute as fraud. Can you not borrow money from family to tide you over. If your overdrawn do you really want to add more debt on top. Will you ever get on top of it as you say you will pay the card off at the end of sept but you have double rent and a deposit to pay now plus you will have rent for August and September as well. I think it's starts of a spiral. If your paying the interest on top of card and the fees for being overdrawn as well

Will your landlord even accept a credit card as payment
    Mortgage free wannabe

    Actual mortgage stating amount £75,150

  • Your credit score means nothing, nahda, zilch
won't you be getting a refund of deposit on current house?
Would you bank convert your account to a graduate one with an increase in overdraft facilities ?

    Thanks for your replies.
It makes sense that I can't use that salary as I guess right now I am technically unemployed.
In terms of paying rent, I can cover that from my bank account - it was just for living and moving expenses e.g. food.
I will be getting a deposit back but not until the end of the original tenancy at which point I will have been paid from work.

I had looked into better graduate accounts a couple months ago ahead of graduating, as HSBC from graduation immediately reduce the interest free OD from 2000 to 1500, but all banks said that it wasn't possible to switch graduate account whilst overdrawn - you had to be in credit, then apply for the overdraft.
